It details Laura's (from a customers perspective) experiences of ordering some of my artwork in print format through Fineart America. Concerning Hobbits

April 24th, 2012

Concerning Hobbits

“As for the Hobbits of the Shire, with whom these tales are concerned, in the days of their peace and prosperity they were a merry folk. They dressed in bright colours, being notably fond of yellow and green; but they seldom wore shoes, since their feet had tough leathery soles and were clad in a thick curling hair.”

-J.R.R. Tolkien, Prologue, Fellowship of the Ring

Current work for sale. The Shire Tolkien inspired art

The Shire (Haymaking the last harvest).

The Lord Of The Rings Tolkien Inspired Art. The painting shows a time when all seems well in the shire, Merry and Pippin can be seen in the foreground sharing beer and smoking Old Tobby, smoke rings and chatting are the order of the day. Farmer Maggot oversees the stoors in haymaking alongside the fertile farmlands of the Brandywine River, one of his trusty dogs Wolf sits by his side. But all is not as it seems, the traveler (from Bree) on the pony is telling of dark goings on in the shire and of strange folk abroad; Mrs Maggot can be seen leaning on the gate eager for gossip.

The Shire is a region of J. R. R. Tolkien's fictional Middle-earth, described in The Lord of the Rings and other works. The Shire refers to an area settled exclusively by Hobbits and largely removed from the goings-on in the rest of Middle-earth.

This is a rare opportunity to purchase an original oil painting on quality canvas by Tolkien artist J.Gilronan.

The Eye of Sauron

March 16th, 2012

The Eye of Sauron

Throughout The Lord of the Rings, "the Eye" (the Red Eye, the Evil Eye, the Lidless Eye, the Great Eye) is the image most often associated with Sauron. Sauron's Orcs bore the symbol of the Eye on their helmets and shields, and referred to him as the "Eye" because he did not allow his name to be written or spoken.

A Hobbits Tale. The Red Book

A Hobbits Tale (The Red Book) Oil on canvas

Bilbo travels to Rivendell to continue work on the red book (tucked under his arm); his two Dwarven companions (Dwarves of the Iron Hills) bid him farewell refusing to go further into Elven territory. Gandalf can be seen on the distant path eager to discover more about the true tale of the One Ring.

The painting is set between the Hobbit and the Lord of The Rings; Gandalf is still unsure as to the powers of the ring that Bilbo won/stole from Gollum.

Traveling song by Bilbo Baggins:-

Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.
Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

Early Influences

February 16th, 2012

Early Influences

The Trolls J.R.R. Tolkien.
One of the things that led me to start painting Tolkien inspired work, was Tolkiens very own naive sketches. Growing up I always read fairy tales, fantasy, mythical works and unlike most books Tolkiens illustrations always left a lot to the imagination and allowed you to form your own ideas on how the characters and locations should look.

Concerning Hobbits

January 27th, 2012

Concerning Hobbits

The Shire is described as a small but beautiful and fruitful land, beloved by its inhabitants. The Hobbits had an extensive agricultural system in the Shire but were not industrialised. The landscape included small pockets of forest (again similar to the English countryside). Various supplies were produced in the Shire, including cereals, fruit, wood and pipe-weed.

Very loose sketch/doodle using various materials paint/tippex/felt tip pens/Biro/chalk or whatever was to hand on paper. I often work in this manner just to get initial ideas down on paper, before going into greater detail on fully finished works.

Black Rider

January 25th, 2012

Black Rider

Those who used the Nine Rings became mighty in their day, kings, sorcerers, and warriors of old. They obtained glory and great wealth, yet it turned to their undoing. They had, as it seemed, unending life, yet life became unendurable to them. They could walk, if they would, unseen by all eyes in this world beneath the sun, and they could see things in worlds invisible to mortal men; but too often they beheld only the phantoms and delusions of Sauron. And one by one, sooner or later, according to their native strength and to the good or evil of their wills in the beginning, they fell under the thraldom of the ring that they bore and of the domination of the One which was Sauron's. And they became forever invisible save to him that wore the Ruling Ring, and they entered into the realm of shadows. The Nazgûl were they, the Ringwraiths, the Úlairi, the Enemy's most terrible servants; darkness went with them, and they cried with the voices of death

Made from the earth
According to the oldest "theory" proposed by J.R.R. Tolkien (from The Book of Lost Tales, circa 1917 — the first tale of Middle-earth to be written in full), Orcs were made of stone and slime through the sorcery of Morgoth:- "bred from the heats and slimes of the earth" Orc of the red eye oil on canvas see further works at:- http://joegilronanlordoftherings.blogspot.com

The Dark Tower

Barad-dûr was built by Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor, with the power of the One Ring, during the Second Age. The building took six hundred years to complete; it was the greatest fortress ever built since the Fall of Angband, and much of Sauron's personal power went into it.

Tolkien quotes Ent song

'When Spring unfolds the beechen leaf,
and sap is in the bough;
When light is on the wild-wood stream,
and wind is on the brow;
When stride is long, and breath is deep,
and keen on the mountain-air,
Come back to me! come back to me,
and say my land is fair!'

Tolkien quotes The Lord of The Rings

All That is Gold Does Not Glitter

Alll that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Tolkien why?

January 12th, 2012

Tolkien why?

I am a full time proffesional artist who has been greatly influenced by the works of Tolkien. I received a Fine Arts Degree in painting from Liverpool University and hold a Higher National Diploma in design and ceramics from the University of Wales. I am orignlly from Chester England but have lived in Olvera Cadiz Spain for the last 4 years. I have exhibited and sold work world wide and work primarly in oils,acryclic and clay.
Influences
Tolkien
Why Tolkien? I suppose it all started from a very early age when I first heard a reading of the Hobbit on a childrens tv show called Jackanory. I just loved the whole world that he had created, this in turn led me to The Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion. Ever since a part of me has inhabited this world and art has allowed me to continue my adventure.
The natural world
Whenever possible, I go for walks into the awe inspiring Andalucian countryside and take photographs and do lots of sketches. So there are lots of trees/mountains/castles and rivers that I have sketched/photographed in my finished works.
Artists
To many to mention but two artists have remained a constant j.w.Turner and my Father r.a.Gilronan who I grew up watching paint.
I hope you enjoy my work.

The road to Rivendell

The road to Rivendell. The Lord of the Rings/Tolkien inspired art.
As the sun sets low over the the misty mountains the companions make camp. Frodo wounded, sits crouched by the fire, Merry, Pippin and Strider watch on with concern; while Sam busies himself attending Bill the pony. Unnoticed on the distance bridge a black rider observes the scene with malice, eager to report back to his fellow pursuers.
Inspired by Flight to the ford chapter twelve The fellowship of the Ring.
